MEADVILLE, PA (March 1, 2013) – The Meadville KOA Campground is celebrating 35 years of serving camping families.  Located just seven miles east of Meadville on Route 27, this one-time fish hatchery and auction barn is now a highly rated, award-winning KOA Campground.

“We have multiple generations of campers camping with us,” said Meadville KOA owner Tim Chilson. “We’ve not only served them and their children, but we now have their grandchildren and great-grandchildren camping with us.  Our goal is to provide a fun and safe family camping environment where families make memories that last a lifetime.”

The Meadville KOA is offering multiple special discounts and vacation specials this summer to celebrate their 35th year of operation, as a thank you to their camping guests.  Those discounts can be found on their website at http://www.meadvillekoa.com/Discounts.html.

“We’ve got some great discounts planned for the 2013 camping season as a thank you to the great camping families who’ve camped with us over these many years,” Chilson said.  “We’ve been very fortunate to meet and serve so many wonderful camping families over our 14 years of ownership.  It is truly our pleasure to serve them, and we’re honored that they rate our facilities and service so highly.  We’ve watched their children, and in some cases grandchildren grow up to become fine citizens and young adults.”

The land was originally purchased from the Holland Land Company in 1893 by the McClemens family, who built a homestead and barn at the site in 1914, in an area known at that time as McClemen’s Flats.

In 1945, the Roae family purchased the property and turned the farm into an auction barn and built ponds for a fish hatchery, where they raised and sold flathead minnows for fishing in Pymatuning Lake. In 1978, they turned the auction barn and farm into Brookdale 1914 Campground, taking the name directly from the date on the old red barn and the brook that runs through the center of the property.

The barn served as the main building complex for the campground until it burned in 1984. The campers helped rebuild the main building, which now serves the campers and local community with a camping & mini-mart store, which is operated seasonally with the campground. The building also houses a recreation hall, game room, restrooms and showers, and a laundry facility for campers.

Brookdale Campground was purchased by Tim & Robyn Chilson in October of 1999 and renamed Brookdale Family Campground. Since their purchase, the Chilsons have added 10 new full-hook-up pull-thru 50 amp campsites for big rigs, free Wi-Fi to all the campsites, a new camping cabin, two new deluxe lake-front cabins, and additional rental recreation with an 18 hole mini golf, a jumping pillow, and pedal karts.

In 2011, Brookdale Family Campground was invited to join Kampgrounds of America as the Meadville KOA. KOA is the largest and most recognized camping franchise in the world with 488 member campgrounds throughout the U.S. and Canada. Meadville KOA was honored to achieve both a guest “A Rating” from Guest Reviews (GoCampingAmerica.com), and the KOA President’s Awards in 2011. They have won the KOA President’s Award each year since joining the KOA family.

Tim and Robyn Chilson are Certified Park Operators by ARVC (The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds). They are members of ARVC and are graduates of the ARVC’s National School of RV Park and Campground Management.  They are members of the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association where Tim serves as the regional vice-president for Western PA, and they are members of KOA Owners Association.

If you travel with kids, grandkids or pets you won’t want to leave home without the product were going to talk about today. And the good news is it’s inexpensive and easy to install. The product I’m talking about is a Ruggids RV step rug.

The Ruggids RV step rug fits most manual and electric steps. It’s made of high quality olefin with a solid rubber backing. This RV step rug is designed to last in all weather conditions and the great news is the deep treads trap the dirt at the door, not inside the RV. Available at Camping World. ~ Mark Polk

When we go camping in the RV something that needs to be done quite often is to clean the floors and other areas of the RV with a vacuum cleaner, especially with kids and dogs running in and out. One problem with this is finding a space big enough to store a bulky vacuum cleaner and then getting it in and out every time you need to use it. I could understand the frustration so I decided to surprise Dawn by installing a Dirt Devil central vacuum cleaner designed for RVs. I installed the vacuum cleaner in an out of the way place, but have it accessible on the interior whenever we need it. ~ Mark Polk Available at Camping World

Did you ever want some light in your RV where there is no light? I think it happens to most of us, you would like a light in a closet or under a cabinet to make it easier to see. Wiring a 12 volt or 120 volt light in your RV is not always possible, so what other options do we have? I found the perfect solution for lighting up those hard to see areas; it’s called rite lite wireless LED puck lights.

LED stands for light emitting diode. These wireless LED lights are extremely energy efficient and work off of 3 triple A batteries. They have 5 super bright white lights that will last up to 100,000 hours. They feature a one touch on/off switch with a dimmer and the light head swivels and pivots for easy positioning of the light. Another great feature is the optional light sensor. If you place it in a closet the light will automatically come on when ambient light is detected and it turns off without ambient light. There is a setting for high ambient light or low ambient light. There are no wires, plugs or difficult installation. It installs in seconds with the hook and loop tape or with the screw provided.
The rite lite wireless LED puck lights work great in all those dark or dimly lit areas of your RV and they are great to have during power outages too. I use them in the RV and around the house. These are long lasting energy efficient lights. Don’t leave home without them. ~ Mark Polk

Winegard Motorized Sensar Batwing Antenna

Raise, rotate and stow the amplified, bi-directional antenna with the user-friendly control panel from inside your RV while parked. Handy warning indicator alerts you by flashing all control panel LEDs if obstruction occurs. Manual override in case of power outage. Wall plate power supply has built-in 2-way splitter for second TV outlet and cable TV input. Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Developed by the Boeing Company for lubrication and protection of aircraft components, Boeshield T-9 is a combination of solvents, lubricants and waxes designed for penetration, moisture displacement, lubrication and corrosion protection. Dries to a thin waxy film that clings to metal for months. Loosens rusty and corroded parts. Safe on paint, plastic and vinyl. 12 oz. aerosol. Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Sunforce 15 Watt Solar Battery charger

A common problem associated with RVs is dead batteries. There are numerous reasons for dead batteries including not fully charging the battery after using it, parasitic loads on the battery, lack of maintenance and overcharging to name a few. To help prevent some of these battery related problems on the old Yellowstone we’re going to install a Sunforce 15 Watt Solar Battery Charger.

It is possible for this solar panel to overcharge the battery so you can use the battery clamp connectors to hook it up when you want the solar panel to charge the battery. There is an optional Sunforce 7 Amp Solar Charge Controller available to prevent the battery from overcharging.

Now when I want to take advantage of the sun to help keep my battery topped off all I have to do is connect the battery clamps to the battery. When I don’t want to chance the battery overcharging I can disconnect it and store the ends in the battery box.

Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Steer Safe

If you drive a motorhome you probably experience issues with the steering from time to time. Steering issues can result from a passing truck, high winds, soft shoulders and from road wander to name a few. Some of these issues can be white knuckle driving experiences.

I discovered a product that can prevent all of these steering issues when you’re on the road. It is called Steer Safe. Steer Safe is installed on your vehicle’s front steering arms and simply clamps onto the front axle. There is no welding required, you just bolt it on. Once it is installed the Steer Safe’s patented oscillating fulcrum bar makes it the only true steering stabilizer on the market.

It provides up to 400 lbs. of preset tension on each front wheel working against any outside forces. Steer safe keeps your front wheels pointing straight, even during a blowout.
Steer Safe protects you against front tire blowouts, potholes, soft shoulders, high winds, wandering, accidental encounters with curbs and high medians. It also reduces driver stress and fatigue. There is no maintenance required because Steer Safe is equipped with Delrin bearings which never require servicing.

Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

JENSEN LED Illuminated LCD TV

These new, high performance JENSEN LED TVs are perfect for the RV lifestyle. These TV’s ranging in size from 15 to 32 inches eliminate size, weight and power constraints which are all concerns among RVers. They operate on 12-volt DC power making them ideal for dry camping too. The use of LED illuminated displays creates a slim, lightweight, space saving TV, great for mounting on the RV wall or on a stand like the one we will be using. This Silhouette TV features high definition with an integrated HDTV tuner and 16.7 million colors in the display.

In addition to the great picture this Jensen TV also features all of the inputs and outputs you will need, and it’s compatible with the DVD player in the Jensen stereo we installed in the Old Yellowstone trailer. When it’s time to kick back and relax you can’t beat a JENSEN LED illuminated TV like this. Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Electric tongue jack

I am all for working smarter, not harder, and when it comes to hitching and unhitching a travel trailer working smarter means installing an electric tongue jack. Stromberg Carlson Products makes this JET 3500 pound electric tongue jack that we got for the old Yellowstone trailer. This model has up to 18 inches of travel and there is a large 3 bulb LED light if you are hitching or unhitching when its dark outside. It also comes with an emergency crank handle to use if you don’t have power.

This 3500 pound electric tongue jack makes easy work of hitching and unhitching. Life just got easier for me with the old Yellowstone trailer. This product is available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Scissor jacks Today we’re going to install a set of scissor jacks on the rear of the old Yellowstone, compliments of Stromberg CarlsonProducts Inc. Scissor jacks help to stabilize the trailer when you set up at you camping destination. And in pop ups and small trailers like this if you don’t have scissor jacks and too much weight shifts to the rear of the trailer the front can flip up in the air. These jacks expand from 4 to 24 inches and the bowtie base works well on soft surfaces. You can weld or bolt the jacks to the frame of the trailer.

Well we killed two birds with one stone. Now we can stabilize the trailer when we’re camping and we don’t need to worry about the front going airborne if everybody decides to sit on the couch. For more information on these scissor jacks and other RV products take a minute to visit Camping World – Choose from: 24″ Scissor Jacks or 30″ Scissor Jacks. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Bunk ladder

When we go camping in the old Yellowstone trailer Tyler will be sleeping in the overhead bunk. I didn’t want him stepping on my arm or leg on the bed below when he needs to get in or out of the bunk so we got this bunk ladder. It’s lightweight and durable and should help me get a peaceful nights rest if Tyler needs to get up in the middle of the night. For more information on the bunk ladder visit Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

The Original Equal-i-zer® Sway Control Hitch, with 4-Point Sway Control™, helps the driver be in control and the passengers be at ease. It has been specially designed to tackle the three biggest problems found with conventional trailer hitches: trailer sway, weight distribution, and complicated hook-ups. Available at Camping World.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

I am a huge advocate for consumer education on tire care and maintenance. I think there is more educational material available now on RV tire care and maintenance than ever before. That’s great news, but with all the care and maintenance in the world it is impossible to know what kind of damage may have already occurred to the inside of a tire, that you are unaware of, and have no way of knowing when the tire might fail.

The good news is there is a way to monitor your tires while you are traveling. It’s called a Tire Pressure Monitoring System available at Camping World.  Don’t leave home without it.  ~ Mark Polk

Digital Tire Pressure Gauge

Something I never leave home without is a quality tire pressure gauge. Like everything else these days’ things are switching from analog to digital. Analog tire pressure gauges were the standard for many years, but advancements in digital technology have improved on that standard. In numerous tests comparing different type gauges digital gauges proved to be the most accurate tested.  Regardless of the type of gauge you choose there are high quality and low quality tire gauges available. Buying a cheap digital gauge would be the same as buying a cheap pencil type gauge. I never leave home without this digital tire pressure gauge by Tire Minder available at Camping World.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to tire pressure gauges:

1)   Spend a few more dollars and get a quality pressure gauge.

2)  If the gauge will be used for checking dual wheels on a motorhome the chuck end of the gauge should have a dual foot design to make the job much easier.

3)   Always select a gauge rated higher than the inflation pressure of the tires you are checking. Applying more pressure than the gauge is rated for can damage the gauge and affect the accuracy. If you over-pressure a gauge have it tested for accuracy. This gauge is rated up to 150 psi.

4)   Try not to drop or jar the gauge. Store the gauge in some type of protective covering or case and in an area where it won’t be hit or damaged.

5)   Periodically have the gauge tested for accuracy. At a minimum compare it to another quality gauge to see if both read the same, or close to the same pressure.

6)   Most importantly, once you purchase a quality pressure gauge use it on a regular basis to check your RV and automobile tires.

The EZ Coupler and Dominator sewer hoses and extension hoses make the not so fun job of emptying the holding tanks a breeze. One of the least favorite jobs having to do with RV’s is emptying the holding tanks. I am all for anything that can make this job easier, and trust me when I say not all RV sewer hoses are made equal.
